høbama

The trio høbama was born in spring 2016 during composer and trumpet player Claus Højensgård’s two-years stay in Bologna in Italy.

Maniscalco and Bandello had already played together in numerous constellations and the group had its succesful debut at the Olive Festival in Cavaion close to Lake Garda in Italy in June 2016. The theme for the festival was the meeting between the Italian and the Nordic jazz scene. The music of høbama draws inspiration from the European and American free jazz scene in the sixties and seventies - especially from smaller free “chamber ensembles” such as Giuffre, Bley and Swallow.

Claus Højensgård plays with a distinctive voice and a precise vocabulary on his trumpet in a language that is both melodic and expressive using extended techniques. He moves naturally and with a big curiosity within a wide range of genres all with a strong integrity and in a way of playing that is always present and daring. As a composer he follows his own personal, simple and direct way within a range of genres: Jazz, afro-jazz, ambient electronica, avant-garde etc.
